What is Equine Complementary Therapy?
Complementary Therapies aid the body, mind and soul to repair, recover and restore health and well-being after injury, illness or a traumatic experience.
Complementary Therapies can be used alongside orthodox medicinal treatments or on their own to treat injuries, some illness, emotional difficulties, pain, inflammation, tension, temperament and behaviour problems.
As an Equine Complementary Therapist I believe good health and well-being in any horse or pony is not only essential for them, but it helps to build a strong partnership and trust with their rider.
Whether you choose to try Aromatherapy, Bach Flower Remedies, Reiki or Herbal Remedies on your Equine best friend, you will be glad you did and thanked dearly as your horse or pony will feel happier, more relaxed, more willing to listen, learn and please.
Herbal Remedies are fairly well known around horses and ponies, and commonly used. They are used externally and internally as you would an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-bacterial etc but with less impact on the liver and kidneys.
Bach Flower Remedies balance out emotions. For example Bach Flower Remedies can help wind suckers, fearful anxious horses and ponies, bossy mares, dominance (whether with other horses or with people), horses that are being picked on and feeling depressed, panicking ie Rescue Remedy, trauma, shock. Quite often horses will reflect our emotions and will behave in accordance to how we feel; sometimes its the handler or rider that needs the remedy.
Aromatherapy I love using these with horses and ponies. Sometimes depending on what we are treating I like to let horses and ponies choose which they would like. The facial expressions are quite entertaining. Aromatherapy can be used on their own or alongside Bach Flowers. It is used topically on wounds and around injuries with an aqueous cream carrier.
Reiki is a hands on treatment that relieves and removes pain and inflammation. It speeds up recovery and healing, allowing Aromatherapy, Bach Flower Remedies and Herbal Remedies to work faster. Sometimes it can be the only treatment needed along with rest for injuries to heal. With Reiki I place my hands on or around the area of pain and inflammation and the heat will draw out the pain and inflammation. Sometimes it can take 1 or 2 treatments, other times if the injury is acute or extreme it can take a few treatments. My favourite part is seeing the expressions on their faces as horses and ponies feel the relief and how they respond to it.
